Isinkwa February 2013

To the moms and dads of Beaulieu Preparatory School and Beaulieu Nursery School, the Isinkwa outreach programme started in 2010 and thanks to the support of parents, teachers and pupils, it has grown tremendously over the years. Late in 2012 the Isinkwa Committee was established in order to broaden our support base, both within the school and in the communities which we aim to assist.

This committee will take responsibility for planning annual outreach events to ensure that these meet the objectives of the BPS/BeNS Outreach Philosophy. The committee will also review what resources each initiative requires, to minimise the burden on the school, but ensure ongoing efficacy of such interventions. The committee will also review current projects on a regular basis, and ensure that new opportunities are created for our children to give of their time, talents and resources in an appropriate and meaningful way.

We would like our children to really understand what Outreach is all about and how they, even in small ways, can really make a difference. Through such initiatives the pupils themselves will be enriched and will grow in the spirit of caring and supporting those less fortunate than themselves.

Our philosophy is such that, despite being a relatively small school, we can still undertake outreach that is meaningful to all those involved.

The recipient of the weekly “Bread for a Buddy” sandwiches is a feeding scheme in Diepsloot.  They also receive Easter Eggs, winter clothing and food, shoes and stationery, Christmas bags, etc. The other recipients include Child Welfare in Toekomsrus, The Village Safe Haven in Buccleuch, MC Weiller Primary in Alexandra, Africa food for Thought, Cosmo City, The Happy Ethan Project and Akani. We may also on an ad hoc basis choose to support certain charities that are close to teachers/pupils within our school.

The BPS/BeNS Outreach Strategy, as well as details of current outreach initiatives, is available on the D6.

We would love to hear from those parents who would like to be involved in the Isinkwa projects, whether it is to lend a helping hand during collection or distribution, or be involved on the committee.

It is not an onerous commitment, but it is one that will change your life !!

Please contact Wendy Ruiter on wruiter@neomail.co.za for more details.

We are looking forward to another wonderful year of outreach,

The Isinkwa Committee.

Dear Parents

STAFF APPOINTMENTS
We are delighted to announce that we have found excellent replacements for Mrs Kemink and Mrs Edwards for the second term of 2013 although we have not yet finalised the replacement for Miss Smit in Grade Four.

Mrs Kemink will be replaced as Head of the Senior Prep (Academics) by Mrs Natascha Williams, from St. Andrews where she has worked for the past nine years. Mrs Williams holds an Honours degree in Education specializing in Educational Management and is currently the Academic Head for  Mathematics, Economic Management Sciences and Life Orientation at St Andrews. Mrs Williams is married and has four grown up daughters. We look forward to Mrs Williams joining our teaching and management staff in the second term.

Mr Steven Beever has been appointed Head of Mathematics and Science from the beginning of the second term. Mr Beever has a degree in Sports Marketing from RAU, a post graduate diploma in Management and Business Administration from Wits Business School and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from UJ. He is currently the Director of Grade Five at St. Stithians as well as Head of Mathematics, Natural Science and Information Technology.
Mr Beever has taken children to the International Mathematics Competition in South Korea and
describes Maths as his passion. He firmly believes that every child can be good at Maths and Science.

We have always enjoyed an incredibly strong and competitive academic environment at Beaulieu Prep and this excellent standard has been taken to new levels by both Mrs. Kemink and Mrs. Edwards.  However, we are impressed by the calibre of our new appointments and know they will have much value to add to our academics; both teachers are well positioned to support a strongly upward academic trajectory.

Of course we shall keep you posted on developments regarding the Grade Four position and continue to do everything possible to find an excellent replacement for Miss Smit.

With warm regards,

MRS N HILLEN

Aftercare 2013 - What you need to know

No lessons 3rd dec 2012 - Founders Day / Grade 0 Graduation, Junior & Senior Prize Giving

MONDAY, 3 DECEMBER 2013

Dear Parents

A reminder of the procedure for this special occasion.

As Founders’ Day is on a Monday, our pupils will not need to attend lessons on that day. Attending the ceremony, however, is compulsory for all pupils and they are to arrive, at the correct time, neatly dressed in full summer uniform (NO cap).

Tracksuit tops / Blazers may be worn only if it is cold. However, pupils in Grade 6 and 7 who have full or half colours must wear their tracksuit tops or blazers to S.P. Prizegiving.

Junior Prizegiving and Grade 0 Graduation will be held separately from the Senior Prizegiving as the hall cannot accommodate all our parents, teachers and pupils at the same time.

Junior Preparatory Prizegiving and Grade Nought Graduation :Grade 0 – Grade 3 pupils must
be at school by 16:00 for proceedings to commence at 16:30. Parents of Junior Preparatory children are asked to join parents of Senior Preparatory children, for refreshments under the bell tower, directly after Junior Prizegiving. Children will receive their refreshments in their classrooms during this time.

Senior Preparatory Prizegiving : Grade 4 – 7 pupils and parents are to be at school by 18:00, for refreshments, followed by prizegiving from approximately 18:30.

Dress code: As this is a formal event on our school calendar, we request that parents adhere to the dress code ‘smart-casual’.

Parking: As parking is limited, the following procedures will be implemented :

Invited VIP guests have been issued with parking tickets to park in the school car park. Please present parking tickets at the gate.

Parents are respectfully requested to park in the school car park near the Western Corridor or on the paved area in front of the school. Please do not park on neighbours’ verges or block access to their properties.

Cedar Entrance: We have arranged for the Cedar Road entrance / exit to be open after hours to accommodate traffic. The gate will be closed at 21:00 i.e. after S.P. Prizegiving.

Seating: As seating is limited we respectfully request that only parents attend the ceremonies. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate other relatives and siblings. As this is a formal occasion, we request that alternative arrangements are made for siblings, who are not pupils at this school, as they find proceedings tedious and can become quite disruptive.

Babysitting Service: We are able to provide a babysitting service in the Auditorium this year from 16:00 – 20:30. However we ask that you make use of this facility only if no other arrangement is possible. If your child / ren make use of this service it is essential that they bring a packed snack and something to drink. We have employed two students to supervise the children during this time. Unfortunately this service cannot cater for siblings at Beaulieu College as the age range will already be diverse.

A suggestion: If you have a child in the junior department as well as a child in the senior department at Beaulieu Prep, you will need to be present at both ceremonies. We suggest that you make an arrangement for your younger child to go home with a classmate after the Junior Privegiving. Similarly, your older child could be dropped off at the home of a classmate before the Junior Prizegiving and brought to school in time for the Senior Prizegiving ceremony. We look forward to an enjoyable evening as our school year draws to a close and look forward to
seeing you on this special occasion.

Yours sincerely

MRS. NOËLE HILLEN
